Making the Best use of Opportunity
Making the best of Opportunity
In this article, we are going to look at the following:
- Opportunity Defined
- Strategic Points on Opportunity
- Preparation Process for Opportunity
- God Factor
1. Opportunity Defined – it is defined, according to the online dictionary as
• A favorable or advantageous circumstance or combination of circumstances.
• A chance for progress or advancement
• Chance to do or a time for doing (something)
"If you prepare yourself . . . you will be able to grasp opportunity for broader experience when it appears" (Eleanor Roosevelt)
2. Strategic Points on Opportunity – highlighted below are strategic points that need to be seriously considered in order to make the best use of ones opportunity in life:
1. Opportunity sometimes comes when you don’t expect it to come. That is why the popular saying: “opportunity comes but once”, it will come when you are least prepared for it to come, but we are going to learn a way to overcome that bearer to using opportunities that come your way. This has to do more with the timing of the opportunity.
2. Opportunity sometimes comes in disguise, as such many people have missed it – often time, opportunity will come to people in disguise and so those that can not unravel the mystery in the disguise will either overlook it or just neglect it totally and the opportunity will be lost, probably not to be regained again. This has to do with the nature of the opportunity.
3. Opportunity sometimes comes as a challenge – Opportunity can sometimes come as a challenge, which makes it difficult for many people not to make use of it, behind some of the Challenges that people face in the world are great opportunities, it takes commitment and digging deep beyond the surface for the person to get to see the opportunity. An adage says “A person that wants to eat the honey in a rock will not look at the edge of the axe” – this is applicable to this strategic point. This has to do with the strength of the opportunity.
3 Preparation Process for Opportunity
In the Institute of Strategic Management, we define Success as: The meeting point of Preparedness and Opportunity – from this definition, it can be seen that to make the best use of any opportunity that comes in your direction, you must be prepared for it. The action of a man is looked into in order to enlighten you about how to prepare yourself for opportunity (Habakkuk 2: 1) – from the Bible.
Habakkuk said: I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved…Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that reads it.
Highlighted below are the steps/processes to take in order to be prepared for opportunities:
Point 1: Strategic Positioning – You must be well and properly positioned for you to see opportunity clearly when it comes your way. Actually, opportunity is available everyday, but it only takes the right positioned person to make use of it. So, you must be in the right location for you to see what you ought to do at a particular time.
Point 2: Visioning – This is the process of seeing where you are going in your mind. This is important because it helps in giving your life a direction, so you will know where you are going and what you want to become in life. When you have a vision, you will be able to stand before people and boldly declare what you have seen and when opportunity comes your way, you will be able to make use of it.
Point 3: Writing the Vision – A vision that is not clearly written will not be easily achieved, so you must learn to write down your vision. It helps in preparing you for the opportunity that comes in your direction. The end point of every vision is success and there is no success without preparedness.
Point 4: Action Taking – The effect of a vision is not felt on paper, it is in action. The first three points are pre-opportunity stages while the last point comes up when the opportunity is available. You must act upon your vision and in response to the opportunity that comes your way.
4. God Factor – The creator of Opportunity is God and He is the one that can make you to see when an opportunity comes your way, He expects man to always be prepared, but He is the one that will make the opportunity to meet with preparedness for you to succeed. If you do not connect to your creator, your eyes will not be opened to see opportunity.
As I said earlier, opportunity could either be negative or positive, for instance, Judas Iscariot, a man well noted for what he did in betraying his master, had an opportunity according to the Bible: the Bible says “And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him” and he was able to get the opportunity using the same process, so if it worked for him, the it can work for you too, just take your time to undergo the process.
Finally, opportunity can be lost if care is not taken, so you must always be conversant with the processes highlighted above, and I declare that every opportunity that comes your way shall be utilized fully to the Glory of God in Jesus name.
